The gravel you see is the cheap part; the shape underneath is the actual driveway. We start by cutting the drive to grade — down to ground that holds, with the humps knocked down and the soft spots dug out and filled with material that compacts. Then the surface gets built up in layers and shaped with a crown, so rain rolls off the sides instead of running down the middle carrying your gravel to the ditch.
That's also why we fix tired driveways at the base instead of just ordering another load of rock. Ruts and washboard are symptoms — the drive has lost its shape and the water is winning. A regrade puts the shape back, reuses the material that's still there, and the fresh gravel on top goes onto a surface that will actually keep it.
A flat driveway is easy. A Hot Springs driveway — dropping off the road, curling around a hillside, landing at a lake place — is a water-management project you also happen to drive on.
